Sunflowers

When grown during its full season, big sunflower crops may yield more than 1000 pounds/acre (1121 kilograms/hectare).  However, it is not recommended that sunflowers be planted in the same area more than once every three to four years.  For farmers growing other crops, the sunflower is considered a weed.  The sunflower is also the symbol of the Vegan Society.  These Naturally Grown Mammoth Sunflower Seeds produce plants that are huge, and reach heights of 8-10 feet.  They are truly giants among the sunflower family.  These seeds are usually pressed into sunflower oil.

The Oil

The oil is typically extracted by applying great pressure to the sunflower seeds and collecting the oil.  Oilseed produces three or more ounces of oil from a pound of seed and is well worth planting along with confectionary-type seeds.   If the husk is solid black, the seeds are called black oil sunflower seeds.  In the future, sunflower oil could become a renewable bio-source for hydrogen and bio-diesel.  Sunflower oil, extracted from the seeds, is used for cooking, as a carrier oil and to produce biodiesel.
